Volta Project - Green Hydrogen and Ammonia Plant

Description: The project consists of the construction and operation of an industrial plant for the production of ammonia from green hydrogen (H2V/NH3 Plant), located 8 km from the city center of Mejillones. The H2V/NH3 plant will have a nominal production capacity of 620,000 tons per year of ammonia, achieving this performance in two successive phases of approximately 310,000 tons per year each. The production of ammonia will be carried out through a synthesis process known as Haber-Bosch, in which hydrogen produced through the electrolysis of demineralized water using electrical energy from renewable sources is combined with gaseous nitrogen captured directly from the atmosphere and subsequently separated from the rest of the components. In relation to hydrogen production, the project contemplates the installation of two electrolyzer trains. These units are aligned with the two successive phases of ammonia production. For the electrolysis process, the use of water from existing desalination plants in the area and that have all permits for commercialization is considered. In addition, the project considers the use of treated wastewater, which is currently discharged directly into the bay. To supply the renewable energy required for the production of green hydrogen and the electrical supply of the facilities, the project considers the activation of a photovoltaic solar plant in an area of approximately 900 hectares, located 8 kilometers south of the ammonia plant, and 10 kilometers from the center of the city of Mejillones.
